What does the word 'transformation' mean to you in this moment? 

 

Autumn 2020 brought forth a worsening global pandemic, a heated presidential election, and skies that started to cool and darken. Seventeen Santa Feans responded to what transformation meant in their lives in that moment through imagery, literature, culinary arts, photography and more. Their responses were curated into 5x7" booklets printed locally and distributed for free throughout Santa Fe.

 

This series was created as a platform for honest creativity, as a physical space to connect, and a keepsake of the historical moments we live in. The series began as a project organized under Creative Santa Fe, and shifted to an independent project as of  November 2020.

John Macker grew up in Colorado and studied journalism at the University of Missouri. He has published 8 full-length books of poetry, 2 audio recordings and several broadsides and chapbooks over 30 years. His most recent are Atlas of Wolves, The Blues Drink Your Dreams Away, Selected Poems 1983-2018, (a 2019 Arizona/New Mexico Book Awards finalist), Gorge Songs (with Denver woodblock artist Leon Loughridge), Blood in the Mix (with El Paso poet Lawrence Welsh) and part three of his “Badlands” trilogy, Disassembled Badlands published by Colorado’s Turkey Buzzard Press, 2014. In 2019, his poem “Happiness” won a Fischer Poetry Prize finalist citation, sponsored by the Telluride Institute,

Inga Hendrickson is a photographer living and working in Santa Fe, NM. She uses image- making to create her own world; carefully constructing scenes within the studio, controlling light and deeply considering objects to create sculptural still life scenes. The work feels more painterly than documentary. The color she employs adds a vibrant reverberation that goes beyond subject, symbol and composition to elicit a powerful and immediate emotional response. In the objects Inga photographs, she finds a methodology for exploring human experience exploring our corporeal existence, our spiritual existence and how to understand our connection to one another and to all matter and space surrounding us.

Megan Jacobs is an artist based in New Mexico. Her work explores delicate relationships—our existence as material and concept, the interweaving between two partners in love and the bond of parent and child. The materials that she works with: photographs, video projections, time- based media, glass, and ice, function metaphorically to illustrate the ambiguity of the body and the mutability of memory and identity. Jacobs’ work has been featured in Musee Magazine, Lenscratch, Feature Shoot, Frankie Magazine, F-STOP Magazine, Fraction Magazine and other publications. Her Hidden Mothers series was selected for Critical Mass Top 50.

 

Malena Mörling was born in Stockholm in 1965 and grew up in southern Sweden. Sho is the author of two books of poetry Ocean Avenue and Astoria. She has published translations of work by Nobel Laureate Tomas Transtromer and together with Jonas Ellerstrom a collection of the Finland-Swedish poet Edith Sodergran, On Foot I Wandered Through the Solar Systems, the collection 1933 by Philip Levine into Swedish, and they have edited and translated the anthology. She is a Professor of Creative Writing at The University of North Carolina, Wilmington and currently living in Santa Fe, NM.

 

Garron Yepa (Diné/Walatowa) is an architectural design professional currently working with Atkin Olshin Schade Architects in Santa Fe. Of Diné and Walatowa heritage, Yepa was born and raised in Albuquerque, NM and has worked in tribal communities for much of his career with the intent of including culturally relevant design in his practice. Yepa is also a board member of the American Indian Science and Engineering Society (AICAE), and continues to promote increased Native enrollment in architecture, planning, and preservation programs. Yepa is also a DJ and goes by the name DJ Garronteed, you may have seen or heard him DJing in one of many special events he’s performed at in and around Santa Fe.

Tina Carlson is a Santa Fe poet. Her most recent book, We Are Meant to Carry Water (3: A Taos Press) is a book of poetic epistles written in collaboration with poets Katherine DiBella Seluja and Stella Reed, in response to the 2016 US presidential election. The book won the AZ/NM book award for poetry anthology and the Southwest Book Design and Production Award for poetry. Her first poetry book, Ground, Wind, This Body (UNM, 2017) explores the impact of war on a family when the veteran does not receive adequate help for their trauma.

 

Lindsay Payton - Four years ago, Lindsay Payton‘s hobby of fiction writing was put on the back burner to make way for the art that was taking over. Mixed media of ink, watercolor, and pastel fill empty frames thrifted from various sources. Today as a local Santa Fean, she continues her narrative illustrations featuring folklore, macabre creatures, botany and ritual. Bringing light to the darkest tales of old so they are never forgotten.

 

Nuttaphol Ma has participated in selected exhibition spaces that include The Fowler Museum, Canadian Museum of Immigration, The Los Angeles Municipal Art Gallery, Human Resources, High Desert Test Sites, 18th Street Art Center and The Armory Center for the Arts. He has given artist talks and led workshops nationally including Otis College of Art and Design, University of New Mexico, Mills College, Open Engagement Conference at Carnegie Mellon University, and Pitzer College. Ma has received generous support from the following fellowships and residencies: The Fulcrum Fund Award, a grant program of 516ARTS made possible by the Andy Warhol Foundation and many others.

 

Amber-Dawn Bear Robe, from Siksika Nation in Alberta, Canada, achieved an MA in American Indian Studies and a second MA degree in Art History, both from the University of Arizona. Currently, she is Assistant Faculty of Art History in the Museum Studies department at the Institute of American Indian Arts, Santa Fe, NM. Latest curatorial projects include organizing the annual Indigenous fashion show for the Southwestern Association for Indian Arts (SWAIA) and curating an exhibition for The Tweed Museum in Duluth, Minnesota titled Blood Memoirs: Exploring Individuality, Memory, and Culture through Portraiture. Previously, she was the Director/Curator of Urban Shaman: Contemporary Aboriginal Art, the largest Aboriginal artist-run center in North America.

 

Amy Sayers is a writer, visual artist and Pilates instructor from Santa Fe, NM. Amy is in the process of seeking representation for her memoir, TINY WHITE DRESSES – FLYING ABOVE DES’S DARK SHADOW. Her writing has appeared in DES Action, Tumbleweeds Magazine, Ariel Gore’s anthology, Places Like Home, tinyletter.com and Jen Pastiloff’s Manifest Station. Her paintings have been exhibited in Santa Fe at LAST GALLERY ON THE RIGHT, CORAZON, HOMEFROCKS, AND SEMIOTIQUE.

 

Natalie Benally is born into the Grey Streaked Ends Clan and born for the Red Running into Water Clan. Her Maternal Grandparents are the Zuni Pueblo Clan and her Paternal Grandparents are the Water’s Edge Clan. As a young Diné girl growing up on the Navajo Reservation, Natalie’s first dance studio was the land she was surrounded by, which taught her movement embedded in cultural connection and storytelling. She is also a self-taught hip hop dancer. Natalie dances with Dancing Eaerth, touring globally. In addition to performing, she works as the Indigenous Programs Coordinator for Girls Inc. of Santa Fe. She is also co-founding a mixed media storytelling company, Tse’Nato’, where she hopes to continue sharing stories of the Native experience through dance, theater, and film. She was recently awarded the Senator John Pinto Native American Filmmakers Fund in 2020 to direct a short film entitled “Mother’s Day”.

 

Anastasio Wrobel (aung.robo) is a multi-process visual artist, an award winning writer and currently a painter, a poet, a photographer and illustrator. They are a gender theorist in life and practice currently living and working in occupied Tewa Land, O’gah Po’Geh. Wrobel creates bright and fluorescent two-dimensional works with varying line widths and small marks. Much of their process is informed by “accumulation” (n. The acquisition or gradual gathering of something). They are the creator of “The Non-Binary Coloring Book” – an abstract coloring book celebrating gender expansion with over forty-two original ink illustrations, “ENBYTOK,” writings and educational musings about transgender experience. Forthcoming projects include “aung.robo: the first decade seattle to santa fe” (Coming August 2021) and a new poetry collection called “Kill the Mean Self Before the Magic Self Dies.”

 

Chef Fernando Olea - Originally from Mexico City, Chef Fernando Olea, formerly Chef/Owner of Epazote Restaurant and Bert’s La Taqueria, has been enthralling diners in Santa Fe since 1991. Chef Olea creates sophisticated flavors using Old Mexico’s indigenous and culinary traditions alongside ingredients from around the world. Chef Olea is well known for his exquisite moles, a sauce of complex flavors that usually includes toasted and ground spices, seeds, nuts, chocolate and chile. Many mole recipes contain more than thirty ingredients and some recipes have five varieties of chile alone. Chef Olea is delighted to share his moles with you at his current restaurant, Sazón, in Santa Fe, NM.

 

Flags of Resilience - www.formandconcept.center - Featured work by Denver-based muralists Jaime Molina and Pedro Barrios, who together create under the moniker The Worst Crew. They released their flag in July, and for their cause, Barrios and Molina chose the Denver branch of the International Rescue Committee, a worldwide nonprofit that helps the displaced through monetary and direct actions— notably, within 72 hours of a crisis.

JC Gonzo takes investigative photographic excursions; researching, documenting, and re-contextualizing sub- and counter-cultural histories as a form of meta-ecology. These reports are depicted through a variety of media, including photography and video, functioning both as a referential document and celebration of chaos as exhibited by the natural world. Currently, his focus lies on New Mexico, his home state. As a journalist, his focus primarily lies on underground musicians and artists, having written for Sensitive Skin Magazine, White Fungus, The Santa Fe Reporter and a year-long art column in the Berlin-based pornographic arts and culture site, Dandy Dicks, in 2016. He earned a self-designed BA in ‘Sexual Liberation As Art’ at the College of Santa Fe in 2011.
